Rishard Matthews bringing Colin Kaepernick's 'Know Your Rights' message to NFL field on his cleats
Matthews doesn’t have a foundation, so he decided he’d support Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp.
For the NFL’s My Cause, My Cleats week, Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews will be supporting Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Right Camp. Matthews will be wearing a pair of white and black cleats, featuring Kaepernick.
Matthews had the shoes made by Miami-based artist Marcus Rivero, who completed the cleats in just five hours:
Matthews’ caption on his Instagram post read:
I dont have a foundation so i have chosen to support my brother @kaepernick7 foundation @yourrightscamp for #MyCauseMyCleats He has paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to bring true everyday issues to light. Please follow the page & go to the website to learn more. We Should ALL Know Our Rights & Be Able to Express Them Freely. Thanks again @solesbysir you continue to impress ✊ ✊ ✊
Matthews and Kaepernick were college teammates at Nevada and have remained good friends.
Rivero put the cleats together in five hours after they were given to him in the Titans’ navy blue and powder blue colors. “He was excited about it,” Rivero told SB Nation. “I know Kaepernick saw it himself. He was really excited and thankful to Rishard for it, so I think [Matthews] got what he wanted out of it.
“He wanted to get a symbol where Kaepernick was on his knee and putting up his fist,” he said. “I kept it kind of self explanatory. The inside of the shoe says, ‘know your rights’ really big.” Rivero and Matthews kept the color scheme identical to the Know Your Rights Camp to keep it about the message.
Rivero put the cleats together two days ago and has been busy making tons of other cleats for NFL players leading up to My Cause, My Cleats.
For shoes to be worn just this week, Rivero has made over 250 cleats starting in Week 2. After seeing his work with the Raiders, Colts, Jaguars, and other teams last season, a number of NFL teams reached out to him early in the season.
Kaepernick started his Know Your Rights Camp last year, as he began his protest of police brutality and oppression against people of color in the United States.
He explained its purpose to The Undefeated last year:
So, myself, my woman, our friends, we came together, we created the [“Know Your Rights”] camp that we wanted to bring to underprivileged communities. Starting first in the Bay Area, trying to reach San Francisco, Oakland, Richmond, communities that are truly affected by a lot of the oppressive issues that we’re facing today. And we want to help bridge that gap, give these kids resources to try to help them advance in life, and give them some of the same opportunities that other people have and have the luxury of having.
Kaepernick may not be on the field this upcoming Sunday — or for the 2017 season — but Matthews has provided him with representation for at least one week.
