Wimbledon results 2017: Stan Wawrinka upset in opening round

Stan Wawrinka was eliminated, but all the other top seeds advanced on the first day of Wimbledon 2017.

Another day, another top-seeded man struggling on the grass courts. On Monday, the third Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon, got underway, and fifth seed Stan Wawrinka found himself on the losing end of his first-round match against Daniil Medvedev.

Wawrinka dropped his match in four sets, with Medvedev advancing to the second round following the 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. He was the only top-seeded man to fall on the first day, with No. 1 seed Andy Murray and No. 4 seed Rafael Nadal both advancing in straight sets.

Nick Kyrgios, the No. 20 seed, had to retire from his match with Pierre-Hugues Herbert, ending his Wimbledon bid early. Other top-seeded men like Marin Cilic, Kei Nishikori, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were all victorious on the day.

Murray came into Wimbledon with a lot to prove despite being the top seed. Murray has struggled in recent tournaments, and found himself eliminated early in the Queen’s tournament prior to Wimbledon. He still has a long way to go before people will think he can take this Grand Slam, especially with Roger Federer looking so good.

On Monday, he made it past Alexander Bublik in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

On the women’s side, only a single seeded player fell on the opening day, a stark contrast to the French Open where the No. 1 seed, Angelique Kerber, fell on Day 1. Kerber wasn’t in action on Monday, but Simona Halep, the second seed, was, and she made short work of her opponent, Marina Erakovic, 6-4, 6-1.

The seeded player to fall was No. 26 Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who lost her opener to Carina Witthoeft.
