Patrick Marleau signs with the Maple Leafs on a 3-year, $18.75 million deal

The long-time San Jose Shark has moved on to Toronto.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and forward Patrick Marleau have agreed to a three-year, $18.75 million contract on the second day of NHL free agency, according to the team. The deal, which ends Marleau’s 19-year tenure in San Jose, has a $6.25 annual cap hit through the 2019-20 season.

The new contract also includes a full no-movement clause.

Despite turning 38 years old before the start of next season, Marleau was still one of the top scorers available this summer. He’s coming off a 27-goal season that proved he can still put it in the back of the net with the best of them.

This is the first contract that Marleau has ever signed with an NHL team other than the San Jose Sharks, who selected him with the second overall pick in the 1997 NHL draft. He had been a face of the franchise ever since, but a new era has begun in San Jose.

The Sharks passed the baton to Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture as their top two forwards, which was made clear when the former was given the captain role after it was stripped from Joe Thornton. Now Marleau is out of San Jose, which will build around Pavelski, Couture, and Brent Burns going forward.

Marleau recorded 508 goals and 574 assists over 19 seasons with the Sharks. He also appeared in 177 playoff games with the team, putting up 120 points in the postseason.

Other top available forwards include Alexander Radulov and Thomas Vanek.
