LeBron James wants to know why there’s a cap on player salary

He cited new Stephen Curry’s contract in his tweet.

LeBron James is questioning why there’s a cap on player salary and he’s citing Stephen Curry’s value to the Warriors in his argument.

James tweeted Saturday, “So tell me again why there’s a cap on how much a player should get?? Don’t answer that. Steph should be getting 400M this summer 5yrs. #JMTs” in response to a tweet about how Curry increased the Warriors’ franchise value.

James also tweeted congrats to Curry on his deal.

What James is talking at here is abolishing the max contract. Curry just agreed to a five-year, $201 million deal with the Warriors, which is the largest deal in league history.

James, though, has a point. Stars like him, Curry and Russell Westbrook - and many, many others - are the reason why the NBA is more popular than ever. The max contract is really a limit on player earnings, and limiting what players are actually worth. James, for instance, could ask for $50 million a year and a team would pay him. He’s worth that, and probably more.

James, down the line, could have a major role in changing this. He’s the vice president of the NBA’s Players Association and he could help the NBAPA make a push for this during the next CBA negotiations. In time, this could be more than a tweet.
