High school in Maine to supply athletic hijabs for its Muslim athletes

0

This is all sorts of awesome

For a lot of Muslim athletes around the country, they have to provide their own sports hijabs.

This won’t be the case for Deering High School. The Portland, Maine-based high school will be providing sports hijabs for its Muslim athletes.

According to the Associated Press, the funding comes from the efforts of tennis co-captains Liva Pierce and Anaise Manikunda. They raised more than $800 online for the sports hijabs. Enough to outfit not just tennis, but all sports at the school.

How cool is that?! This is a welcomed change considering that many Muslim athletes have had to provide their own sports hijabs.

The sports hijab differs from the other hijabs in the fact that it is lighter and has a lower risk of falling off.

"We're more confident on the field," said Fadumo Adan, a junior lacrosse player at the school. "This one doesn't fall off. No matter what I do, it won't fall off.”

The school will be getting its hijabs from Asiya, a company that originated in Minnesota. Nike will also make sports hijabs, which will be available next year.

Deering is believed to be the first high school to provide sports hijabs. Here's to hoping other institutions around the country follow suit.
