Angels sign Michael Bourn to minor-league deal

The outfielder will provide depth in Mike Trout’s absence.

The Angels have signed outfielder Michael Bourn to a minor-league deal, a source told SB Nation. Bourn will be assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Bourn, 34, opted out of his minor-league deal with Baltimore late last month, hitting free agency for the third time since last season. He will provide depth at Salt Lake in the wake of Mike Trout’s thumb injury, as Eric Young Jr. joined the major-league roster in place of Trout.

The Halos now employ three veterans with center-field experience in Bourn, Young and Ben Revere, giving them options while Trout is up. Bourn, who hit .220/.373/.317 in 11 games for Triple-A Norfolk this year, may be a candidate for promotion if Young struggles in the majors.

Bourn is a veteran of 11 major-league seasons with six different clubs, last appearing in the majors last season. In 113 games between the Diamondbacks and Orioles, he hit .264/.314/.371 with five homers and 38 RBI.
