Babe Ruth Museum: Negro League Day symposium (Baltimore, MD)

Date:
2017-05-13

On Saturday, May 13, 2017 the Hubert V Simmons Museum of Negro Baseball Leagues (SMNLB) will host a symposium starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum, 216 Emory Street in Baltimore.

The talk is being given in honor of Negro League Day in Maryland, first declared in 2009 by then Governor Martin O’Malley, to be held on the second Saturday in May.

The panel discussion will be led by SMNLB President Dr. Bob Heronimus and SABR member Michael Gibbons of the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum. Invited VIPs include Orioles Hall of Famer Al Bumbry, former Negro League players Pedro Sierra & Mrs. Mamie “Peanut” Johnson (one of the few remaining players and one of three women to play in the Negro League), Washington Senators alum Fred Valentine, former NFL star Jean Fugett Jr. (who is Adam Jones’ father-in-law) and State Delegate Sandy Rosenberg, among others.

With recent events in Boston the conversation should be quite current. Panelists will be available following the talk during a short reception. Guests may attend the event for the price of the Museum admission.

The Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum, 216 Emory Street in Baltimore, is honored to host this event as its namesake, Babe Ruth, often barnstormed with the Negro Leagues during the off season. He never altered his positive approach to the African-American community. He played games against Negro League teams in 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, and again in Kansas City in 1931 to compete with the Monarchs. Baltimore has a rich Negro League history, hosting two Championship Negro League teams, the Black Sox and Elite Giants.
