Morning Briefing: Mauricio the Latest Unlikely Hero

0 32

Good morning, Mets fans! Four home games, two walk-off wins!

Ronny Mauricio drove an 0-2 pitch over the right-fielder’s head to give the Mets a 4-3 victory in 10 innings over the Diamondbacks Tuesday in the opening game of a six-game homestand. Jared Young tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Luis García, Brooks Raley, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver threw five scoreless innings combined and struck out five.

Freddy Peralta left with the bases loaded in the fifth and the Mets up 2-0. He had thrown 102 pitches and allowed three straight men to reach (single, walk, hit-by-pitch). Huascar Brazobán gave up two hits that allowed all three of the inherited runners to score.

The Mets (7-4) have won four in a row. Mauricio’s clutch hit came two days after Luis Torrens came through with a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning against the Giants. Mark Vientos, Tyrone Taylor and Young have all had their moments during the winning streak.

After a poor outing in San Francisco, David Peterson (0-1, 4.66 ERA) will look to rebound Wednesday in another 4:10 p.m. ET start. RHP Ryne Nelson (0-1, 5.79 ERA) is pitching for Arizona. The game will air on SNY.
