CPBL's Lions make Asia-Pacific International Baseball Centre their new home

Professional baseball opened a new chapter in southern Taiwan as the UniPresident 7-Eleven Lions welcomed the TSG Hawks in the inaugural game at the Lions' new home - The Main Stadium at the Asia-Pacific International Baseball Stadiums and Training Centres (ASPAC) complex. The 2026 season started in front of a sell-out crowd of 23,500.

Lions starter Jackson Stephens (six scoreless innings, five strikeouts and two walks) became the first winning pitcher at the new ballpark, while the Hawks' ace Tzu-Peng Huang, who allowed two earned runs over seven innings, while striking out three, took the loss. At the same time, Lions outfielder Chih-Chieh Su registered the first home run in the history of the ballpark.

The ASPAC project began in 2012, with World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) President Riccardo Fraccari, then the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) President, serving as the project's Highest Advisor.

The ASPAC includes two U-12 playing fields, two practice fields, two adult-level fields, one indoor practice facility, and an indoor/outdoor bullpen and batting facilities.

Construction began with the U-12 fields, which hosted the fifth edition of the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup in 2019. Tainan hosted the U-12 Baseball World Cup at the Municipal Baseball Stadium in 2017, and the ASPAC has hosted each edition through 2025 and will be the home of the U-12 Baseball World Cup also in 2027.

The second phase of the construction, which includes the Main Stadium and Second Stadium, broke ground in August 2020, with the Second Stadium completed in 2023 and the Main Stadium completed in 2025.

With the coordination of the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association and the support from the Ministry of Sports and Taiwan Sports Training Centre, the Asia Pacific Baseball Training Centres (U-12 fields, all indoor and outdoor practice fields, and Second Stadium) have been designated as the Training Base for Chinese Taipei baseball teams of all levels.

In October 2025, Tainan City announced that the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions would relocate from the old Tainan Stadium to the Main Stadium of the Training Centres, making it the Lions’ new home field

The ASPAC Second Stadium will host one of the groups in the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup 2026 Group Stage from August 23 to 27.

Farewell to the old Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium

The Lions bid farewell to their old stadium, Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium, which served as their home field and training base for more than 36 years since the Chinese Professional Baseball League's inauguration in 1989.

Tainan Stadium was built in 1930 during the Japanese colonial era, under the supervision of then-Tainan Mayor Hikojuro Hishimura. The construction of the 900-seat stadium, built on a former graveyard, was completed on January 31, 1931, and the team Tainan White defeated All-Taichung City 10-4 in the inaugural game on February 6.

In 1982, Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium became the first ballpark in Taiwan to feature artificial turf. Still, the turf was replaced with a grass field in 1988 due to difficulties maintaining the surface.

After the 1995 season, construction of an upper deck began at Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium, making it the first ballpark in Taiwan to feature one over its bleachers.

The Lions officially adopted the stadium in 1999 and have since carried out various expansion projects.

Over the past 36 seasons, the Lions went 686-529-36 (W-L-D) at Tainan Stadium, accumulating a .548 winning percentage.

The Lions also clinched three of their 10 Taiwan Series titles at Tainan Stadium, including Taiwan Series 2009, completing the franchise's first three-peat.

The Tainan Municipal Stadium has hosted a total of 1,409 CPBL regular season games, 16 playoff games, and 36 Taiwan Series games.

More New Ballparks on the Horizon in Taiwan

With the Taipei Dome inaugurated in 2023 and quickly becoming the favourite venue for baseball fans, several other new baseball fields are currently being planned and built.

Both New Taipei City and Taichung City are working to build domed stadiums suitable for international and professional baseball games. According to information from the Taichung City Government, the goal is to open the Taichung Super Dome in 2031, while New Taipei City plans to announce its final decision on the venue location of the New Taipei City Dome in mid-2026.

Meanwhile, a 15,000-seat open-air baseball stadium in Pingtung County is under construction and is expected to open in 2027.
