Justin Crawford, Edmundo Sosa play hero as Phillies complete comeback victory
PHILADELPHIA — Edmundo Sosa circled his right arm as he ran to first base, waving home the pair of lead runners on his two-run game-tying single in the ninth. An inning later, rookie Justin Crawford bumped chests with Brandon Marsh and was mobbed by teammates after his walk-off single.
The Phillies scratched across just one run for six frames on Wednesday afternoon and trailed by foul runs going into the bottom of the seventh. But Sosa, a role-playing spark plug, and Crawford, a first-year top prospect, provided the necessary energy to complete a 6-5, extra-inning come-from-behind victory over the Nationals on Wednesday afternoon.
This opening homestand of the season wasn’t always pretty for the Phillies, but they salvaged a series win against Washington with their late comeback. They’ll head to Colorado for their first road trip with a 3-3 record.
Down 5-1 in the seventh, J.T. Realmuto hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to three. Bryce Harper followed the next inning with his first home run of the season, circled the bases and pointed high into the stands behind the plate as he touched home.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Sosa’s two-run single in the ninth tied the game. He made a jumping catch on a line drive and doubled off a runner at second to end the top of the 10th, setting up Crawford to hit the game winner into right field.
