Morning Briefing: Elian Peña to Open Season With Single-A St. Lucie

Good morning, Mets fans!

Per Matt Eddy of Baseball America, the New York Mets are assigning shortstop Elian Peña to Single-A St. Lucie to begin the 2026 season. The 18-year old will skip the FCL and is being fast-tracked straight to St. Lucie, which opens its 2026 slate April 7 against the Dunedin Blue Jays.

The Mets beat the Pirates 4-2 on Saturday to clinch the season-opening series, improving to 2-0. It was scoreless for the first nine innings, but it ended in Luis Robert Jr. slamming a walk-off three-run homer in the 11th. Read more here.

The Texas Rangers on Saturday announced that right-handed pitcher Jacob deGrom was scratched from his scheduled start in Philadelphia due to neck stiffness. Left-handed pitcher Jacob Latz was scheduled to make the start for Texas instead.

According to Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Marlins announced that Deyvison De Los Santos was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville and Christopher Morel was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

Per Chris Hatfield of Sox Prospects, veteran infielder Brendan Rogers re-signed with the Red Sox on a two-year minor league deal. The team had released him earlier this week.
