Morning Briefing: Italy Helps Team USA Advance

Good morning, Mets fans.

Team USA needed help on Wednesday night, and they got it with Italy beating Mexico. USA will now move on to the quarterfinal and play Canada on Friday in Houston at 8 p.m. ET.

As mentioned, Italy beat Mexico by a 9-1 score behind three home runs from first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino. Mets nemesis Jon Berti also homered for Italy, and Aaron Nola tossed five scoreless innings. Italy won the pool with a 4-0 record and will now face Team Venezuela on Friday at 3 p.m. ET in Houston.

Canada beat Cuba 7-2 to win Pool A and face USA in the quarterfinals. Abraham Toro was the star for Canada on Wednesday night, going 3-for-5 with his first home run of the tourney.

In the final game of the night, the Dominican Republic beat Venezuela 7-5 to win Pool D. Juan Soto, Ketel Marte, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Fernando Tatis Jr. all homered for the DR. Soto knocked in two runs, scored two runs and picked up a walk. Mets reliever Huascar Brazobán struck out three in a scoreless inning for the winning DR.

The Dominican team will play Korea at 6:30 p.m. ET in Miami on Friday. Venezuela will have the tough task of beating the defending champion Japan team on Saturday in Miami.
