The Friars have reportedly agreed to deals with former Met Griffin Canning and former Phillie Nick Castellanos. The Canning deal was first reported Friday night by the Devine Sports Gospel, and confirmed this morning by Robert Murray who stated the deal would be official once Canning passed a physical. Murray also reported that Castellanos and the Padres had agreed to a deal Saturday morning, with San Diego paying the league minimum. The right-handed bat had a tumultuous ending with the city of Philadelphia, first being told not to report to camp, then being released due to various clubhouse issues in 2025 which Castellanos touched on in an Instagram post. With the addition of Castellanos and Canning, the Padres have surpassed their 40-man roster and will have to make a corresponding move.
Castellanos’s best season with the Phillies came in 2023, where he slashed .272/.311/.431 with 29 homers and an 111 OPS+. He never recorded an OPS at .800 during his time in Philadelphia, and struggled last season to a .694 OPS and -0.8 bWAR. Meanwhile, Canning was in the midst of a resurgent year in 2025 before tearing his achilles in a start in June against the Braves. The righty registered a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts with the Mets and allowing less than a home run per start (0.9).
