Phillies re-sign Tim Mayza to minor league deal, lose Weston Wilson to waivers
A familiar name will be in camp with the Phillies this spring.
Left-hander Tim Mayza was re-signed to a minor league contract, according to Steve Potter. The former Blue Jays and Yankees pitcher was claimed off waivers by the Phillies in September from the Pirates, appearing in eight games and posting a 4.91 ERA. Mayza was included on the postseason roster for the Division Series against the Dodgers, but did not pitch.
Utility man Weston Wilson was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles, the Phillies announced on Thursday. Wilson was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Tuesday to make room for J.T. Realmuto on the 40-man roster.
Wilson debuted in the majors with the Phillies in 2023 after a long minor league career in the Brewers organization. He was an up-and-down depth option for the club over the last three seasons. His best moment came on Aug. 15, 2024, when he became the 10th Phillies player to hit for the cycle.
Wilson’s 31 home runs for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs in 2023 is a single-season record. In 245 total plate appearances with the major league club, Wilson batted .242 with nine home runs and a .756 OPS.
