Cubs Close to Acquiring Edward Cabrera
The Miami Marlins are close to trading 28-year-old starting pitcher Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs. Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation was the first to report, with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic confirming. As of 12:23 p.m. ET, Jesse Rogers of ESPN confirmed that the Cubs are currently reviewing Cabrera’s medicals. The return to the Marlins has not yet been confirmed, but Rogers stated that position player prospects are likely to be sent to Miami.
Cabrera, formerly a top 100 prospect, had arguably his best season in 2025. He pitched a career high 137 2/3 innings to a 3.53 ERA and 1.228 WHIP with a 25.8% strikeout rate and 8.3% walk rate. He is a career 4.07 ERA and 1.309 WHIP pitcher who has struggled with various injuries since his debut in 2021, including shoulder issues, back issues, and elbow tightness and inflammation that landed him on the injured list for most of September at the end of the 2025 season.
If the trade is completed, Cabrera would join a rotation currently staffed with Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Cade Horton, Jameson Taillon, and Colin Rea.
The Mets, Yankees and Giants were also reported to have shown interest in Cabrera.
