Rundown
Seranthony Domínguez had the best season since his rookie year in 2025, splitting time between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. He was the winning pitcher in Game One of the World Series, and in five WS games, pitched to a spectacular 1.93 ERA.
Domínguez throws a four-seam fastball, which averages 97.6 mph, a sweeper with -10.1 inches of horizontal break, a -7.6 VAA splitter, a 97.8 mph sinker, and an 83.6 mph curveball with -11.2 inches of iBV. These pitches combined for an impressive 32.9% whiff rate in 2025 (94th percentile). His splitter (49.5% whiff%) and sweeper (47.2% whiff%) helped dominate against hitters.
When most people think of Domínguez, they think of his high 90s fastball coming in from a 30-degree arm angle, but the real difference maker in 2025 was a new splitter he introduced. With 843 rpm of spin, 3.2 inches of iBV, 8.5 inches of horizontal break, and -7.6 VAA, you can argue that the splitter is his best pitch. It ran the best batting average against at .144 and the best SLG against at .159. This continued throughout the season, with batters hitting .189 against it in August and .172 against it in September. By Baseball Savant’s run value, his splitter was on par with Mariners’ ace Logan Gilbert at +3.
In 2025, Domínguez was in the 89th percentile in average exit velocity at 87.5 mph, 74th percentile in Barrel% at 6.2%, 79th percentile in hard hit rate at 39.6%, 91st percentile in zone contact at 78.9%, 91st percentile in K rate at 30.3%, and 61st percentile in ground ball rate at 43.1%. His one major flaw is that he walks too many batters (13.8%, 1st percentile) and does not fill up the zone with his 44.6% zone rate (1st percentile). He does not get enough chase at 27.8% (41st percentile), which leads to the higher walk rate.
Contract
MLB Trade Rumors predicts a two-year, $18 million for Domínguez. This is right in line with the two-year, $19 million contract Kyle Finnegan signed to return to the Tigers. For reference, Finnegan posted a 3.47 ERA in 2025 and saved 24 games (55 strikeouts, 18 walks in 57 innings pitched).
Recommendation: Try To Sign
Domínguez brings something to the Mets bullpen they do not have at the moment: velocity. Per Fangraphs Roster Resource, their highest velocity reliever at the moment is Luke Weaver at 95.1 mph. It is possible the Mets think prospect Dylan Ross, who they added to the 40-man roster last September, and has hit 102 MPH on his fastball, can be a solution, but the Mets could benefit from another veteran in their bullpen. Ross also ran an even higher walk rate in Triple-A than Dominguez did in the majors at 14.7%.
Domínguez may also be a perfect pairing for new Mets pitching coach Justin Willard, who preaches utilizing plus stuff to attack the zone. If Dominguez can improve his command, he could go from an already strong weapon to potentially an elite arm out of the bullpen.
