Morning Briefing: Jeff Passan Expects Mets to Make Big Move This Offseason

Good morning, Mets fans!

In a post on Threads, ESPN’s Jeff Passan stated that he still “absolutely expects” president of baseball operations David Stearns to make a big move, whether it be via the free agent or trade market, this offseason.

“My kind of question: open-ended and profane!” he wrote. “I’ve written this, but I’ll say it again: It’s OK to be bad, it’s OK to have a bad clubhouse, it’s not OK to have both. This is almost a wholesale jettisoning. And now David Stearns gets a chance to rebuild in his vision. Historically, it has been very disciplined and very practical and very not splashy. And while I absolutely expect the Mets to get a big free agent, make a big trade or both, I don’t inherently dislike a time taking its time.”

Now onto the morning briefing!

Latest Mets News

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Mets made an effort to acquire Willson Contreras before he was ultimately dealt to the Boston Red Sox. The report notes that the discussions occurred before the trade and highlights how active the Mets were behind the scenes as they explored multiple offensive upgrades.

The same New York Post report adds broader context to the Mets’ offseason approach, noting that the club, along with the San Francisco Giants and Baltimore Orioles, previously met with star free-agent pitcher Framber Valdez. While the Mets have shown a willingness to make long-term commitments in specific situations, including their reported $325 million offer to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, they generally prefer to avoid lengthy deals unless the circumstances are right.

The Mets have released minor league outfielder Vladi Guerrero, the son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, according to insider Héctor Gómez. Guerrero had signed with the organization in January 2024 for a $117,000 signing bonus, along with a $60,000 scholarship bonus, before being let go earlier this week.

Latest MLB News

There’s some contract news out of Sacramento, as Passan reports that the A’s have agreed to a massive extension with left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. The seven-year deal is worth $86 million, the largest guaranteed contract in franchise history, and includes an eighth-year club option plus escalators that could push the total value to $131 million.
