Pete Alonso Heading to Winter Meetings

0 12

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Pete Alonso is heading to the Winter Meetings on Tuesday to meet with prospective teams. The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles are among the teams Pete is expected to meet with.

It is unclear if Pete will meet with the Mets again tomorrow. He met with the Mets already in November, and Jon Heyman reported that the meeting went very well.

Pete is reportedly seeking a deal of at least seven years, but last week, Joel Sherman reported that team officials he spoke with are skeptical that he will find the length he is looking for and may struggle even to find a four-year deal. This may be a driving force in his decision to come to the Winter Meetings and meet with teams himself.

Pete’s agent, Scott Boras, has been clear that Pete is open to playing both first base and designated hitter for a team, and recognizes that a return to the Mets would involve spending more time at the designated hitter spot than in past seasons. Last year, he slashed .272/.347/.524/.871 with 38 HRs and 126 RBIs.

If Pete does not return to the Mets, they may turn to slugger Kyle Schwarber to fill their DH role. Earlier today Mike Puma reported the Mets have shown interest in the left-handed hitter. It is unclear if the Mets would look to sign both Schwarber and Alonso.

Time will tell if Pete’s free agency this year will be quicker and more lucrative than last year, when he signed his two-year, $54 million contract in February.
