Morabito Cracks First AFL Homer
Nick Morabito hit the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning 442 feet on Sunday, and the Scottsdale Scorpions beat the Peoria Javelinas 4-1 in the Arizona Fall League. Brett Banks threw a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to earn the save.
Morabito added an RBI single in the third and finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a strikeout. The 22-year-old, a 2022 second-round pick from Gonzaga College (Washington, DC) HS, is hitting .340/.435/.472 in 13 AFL games. The homer was his first. The outfielder is 18-for-53 overall with 12 steals in 14 attempts. He is third in the AFL in stolen bases.
Banks, 24, a 2023 11th-round pick from UNC-Wilmington, has given up four runs in six AFL innings. He’s struck out 13 and walked five.
Morabito, who ranked 16th in MMO’s August prospect update, hit .273/.348/.385 with six homers and 59 RBIs in 492 plate appearances at Double-A Binghamton this year. He stole 49 in 60 tries. Banks threw 10 1/3 innings of one-run ball at Low-A St. Lucie before he was promoted to High-A Brooklyn, where he went 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA. He struck out 26 in 25 1/3 innings.
First-place Scottsdale (16-6) is off Monday. They play Mesa (11-11) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET. The AFL regular season concludes on Nov. 12. The playoffs take place Nov. 13-15.
