2025 Review
Ronny Mauricio tearing an ACL in December of 2023 set him way behind in his development. Mauricio was not able to return from that injury until June of 2025. Prior to that, he had to have two separate surgeries on the knee and spent 19 games and 73 plate appearances rehabbing throughout the Mets’ minor league system.
During that rehab, he excelled once he got to the Triple-A level, posting a .515/.564/.818 (1.382) slash line across 33 at-bats. He was finally called up and made his return to the lineup on June 3. His first major league appearance since the end of the 2023 season on October 1. Unfortunately, Mauricio was unable to gain any consistent footing and struggled throughout the remainder of the season.
In all, Mauricio had 168 at-bats in 2025 and posted a lackluster .226 batting average, .663 OPS, and 88 OPS+. He struck out an alarming 29.3% of the time; way above the 22.5% MLB average. He showed little-to-no plate discipline (39.9% chase rate) and when he did swing, whiffed a ton (33.9% whiff rate). Each contributed directly to the aforementioned subpar strikeout rate.
The two aspect of Mauricio’s game that was strong was his average exit velocity (91.2 mph) and bat speed (73.8 mph). Those figures ranked in the league’s 78th and 73rd percentiles, respectively. Of course, those usually work hand-and-hand. You swing the bat harder and the higher velocity the ball will have coming off the bat. However, as was explained above, that does not matter if you are unable to make consistent contact.
Interestingly, another factor that contributed to his overall numbers looking so poor was his performance as a right-handed hitter. As a switch hitter, Mauricio had extreme splits on each side of the plate. Against left-handed pitchers, Mauricio hit .083 with a .215 OPS. However, against right-handed pitchers, at the left side of the plate, Mauricio hit .265 and had a .783 OPS. Mauricio was unplayable against left-handed pitching on the right side of the plate.
On the positive side, defensively, the 24-year-old excelled at third base. Mauricio played 292 innings at third base in 2025 and posted a plus-four defensive runs saved (DRS) and plus-five outs above average (OAA). Despite being a premier defender at third base, Mauricio did struggle in his 49 innings at second, where he posted a negative-one DRS and negative-two OAA. It is clear, if Mauricio remains in the big leagues, third base is the position for him.
2026 Preview
Mauricio is under team control through the 2029 season and won’t become a free agent until 2030. So, pending trade or injury, Mauricio will be a factor for the foreseeable future if the Mets want him to be.
Mauricio’s tools are all there. When he makes the contact, the ball absolutely flies. However, to be consistently productive, he must cut down on the whiffing as well as become more disciplined at the plate. 2025 was not a completely loss season though, as Mauricio was terrific defensively at third base and his work from the left side of the plate was encouraging. Hopefully, with a full spring training, the Mets will start to see the prized prospect that they thought they had in Mauricio come 2026.
With that being said, there is a lot of “if” for Mauricio, however, there are at-bats available for him in the designated hitting spot. He can also serve as insurance behind Brett Baty at third base. Jeff McNeil is slated to be the second baseman, pending a trade, and given Mauricio’s struggles defensively at second base, and McNeil being a left-handed hitter, a path for play at second base seems unlikely.
Regardless, it is an extremely important 2026 for the young infielder. Another lackluster season at the plate and time may run out on his time to get it sorted with the organization. It would not be surprising if he was used as a trade chip in the offseason either. Especially given the emergence of Baty at third base. Though, only time will tell.
