As Expected, Alonso Confirms He’ll Opt-Out; Díaz Undecided

0 24

Pete Alonso officially confirmed to reporters after Sunday’s season finale that he will indeed opt-out of his contract and decline his $24 million player option ahead of the 2026 season.

It was an inevitable move for Alonso, who flourished offensively in 2025, hitting 38 home runs and driving in 126 runs. He slashed .272/.347/.524, improving his OPS 83 points from 2024, all while playing 162 games for the second straight season.

It will be another interesting offseason for Alonso, who no longer can be given the qualifying offer. It remains to be seen if that factor, coupled with his stand-out season, will make other teams more interested in his services this winter.

Meanwhile, closer Edwin Díaz was much more non-committal on whether he would exercise his opt-out ahead of the offseason. Díaz just finished year three of the record-breaking contract he signed after the 2022 season, and can opt-out of the final two years if he so chooses.

“I was waiting for the season to (end) to go home, talk to my family….I want my family to feel comfortable, to feel part of all my decisions,” Díaz said after being asked about his future.

When asked if he would want to return after a possible opt-out, Díaz responded in the affirmative.

“Yeah, of course,” Díaz said, “I love this organization. They treat me really, really good, my family, everything. You know, if I decide to opt-out, I would love to come back.”

The Mets closer had his second-best season in Queens, only behind his most recent contract year. Díaz pitched to a 1.63 ERA in 62 games, amassing 28 saves.

The two biggest questions by far of this offseason for David Stearns and Mets brass will be what will they do to sign or replace Alonso and Díaz if he does indeed opt-out. Unfortunately for the team, the offseason begins much sooner than anyone would have expected.
