Mets Minors Recap: Syracuse’s Big Guns Struggle In Loss
In their second-to-last game of the Triple-A regular season, Syracuse fell 5-3 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. The offense produced three runs in the second but nothing after, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine on base. The bullpen couldn’t hold the lead, giving up a homer in the sixth and three runs in the eighth.
Triple-A
Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (87-60) 5, Syracuse Mets (76-73) 3
- SS Jett Williams: 0-for-5, 2 K (.692 OPS)
- CF Carson Benge: 0-for-2, 2 BB (.558 OPS)
- C Hayden Senger: 2-for-4, 2B, R (.607 OPS)
- 3B Luis De Los Santos: 2-for-3, HR, BB, 3 RBI, R (.623 OPS)
The back end of Syracuse’s lineup carried the offense, with Senger, Yonny Hernández, Gilberto Celestino, and De Los Santos accounting for all of the team’s hits from the six-to-nine spots in the lineup. De Los Santos supplied the big swing, launching a hanging curveball for a three-run homer in the second. Meanwhile, the Mets’ top prospect trio of Williams, Benge and Ryan Clifford went a combined 0-for-11, though Benge reached base twice on walks.
- RHP Justin Hagenman: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K (5.58 ERA)
The 28-year-old Hagenman, who had struggled of late, turned in a strong outing Saturday. He fanned four IronPigs without allowing an earned run across five innings of work. Kevin Herget followed with two innings of relief, striking out six but surrendering a solo homer. Unfortunately, Austin Warren faltered in the eighth, giving up three runs on five baserunners to cost Syracuse its lead.
