Players of the Week: Alonso and McLean Lead the Mets

0 181

The Mets started off last week (August 25-31) superb. They swept the first place N.L. East Phillies to pull within four games of them. Things were looking great, and then the Marlins came to town. The Mets played some sloppy baseball, committing six errors in four games. They dropped three of four to the Marlins. This places the Mets six games behind the Phillies for the N.L. East lead. On the bright side, the Mets sit four games ahead of the Reds who had a tough week for themselves as well.

Pete Alonso by Roberto Carlo

Offensive Player of the Week: Pete Alonso

Alonso had himself a very strong week. He went 13-for-32. He had a remarkable slash line of .406/.424/.656 with an OPS of 1.080. Pete slugged home runs in back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday. His home run on Thursday was smoked for 425 feet with an exit velocity of 111.4 mph. He also drove in seven RBIs and scored seven runs. The Polar Bear thoroughly enjoyed the month of August finishing the month with nine home runs, 29 RBIs with a .925 OPS.

Pitcher of the Week: Nolan McLean

McLean has been nothing short of brilliant since his MLB debut, something the Mets can really use from their starting rotation as of late. McLean started one game last week in which he went eight innings. He struck out six batters while only allowing four hits. Most impressively, he gave up zero runs for his performance. McLean going six plus innings in consecutive starts was the first time since June 7 where a Mets starter, other than David Peterson, was able to accomplish this feat.

Honorable Mention: Juan Soto

Soto was dominant last week. Soto slashed .333/.500/.708 with an OPS of 1.208. He crushed three home runs and drove in seven RBIs. Soto also continued his sneaky stealing ways, snagging five stolen bases. When Soto wasn’t recording hits, he still was being productive at the plate by taking walks, with seven over the course of seven games.

Up Next

The Mets’ upcoming road trip will be the ultimate test for the end of the season, playing teams that are all in the playoff hunt. They’ve started with the A.L. Central first place Detroit Tigers and won on Monday. They then travel to Cincinnati to play their Wild Card foes, the Reds. This is a critical series in which the Mets can really pull ahead of the Reds in the third Wild Card spot. The Mets then travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies in their last regular season matchup. Depending on how the road trip starts, the Mets can still be competing for the division with these four games in Philadelphia.
