Morning Briefing: Happy Jonah Tong Day
Good morning, Mets fans!
The Mets’ three-game winning streak came to an end Thursday night as sloppy defense cost them in a 7-4 loss to the Marlins at Citi Field. Three errors led to five unearned runs, undoing strong moments from Pete Alonso, who hit his 30th homer of the season, and Francisco Lindor, who collected three hits. Read the full recap here.
The Phillies destroyed the Braves 19-4 behind four home runs from Kyle Schwarber, so they gained a game back in the NL East race. New York now sits at five games out of first place. The Mets fell to three games behind the second Wild Card in the Padres, who were off Thursday. They’re still four games ahead of the Reds for the final Wild Card spot.
In other news, the Syracuse Mets highlighted Jonah Tong’s Mets Minute, where the young pitcher shared how he learned about his call-up and what excites him most about his debut.
Tong makes his highly-anticipated MLB debut tonight at 7:10 p.m. CT. He owns a 1.43 ERA in 113 2/3 innings across two levels this season. He’ll have a tough act to follow, though, in Nolan McLean‘s recent dominance.
