Peterson Dominates, Offense Erupts as Mets Top Nationals 8-1

0 1

The New York Mets (67-58) defeated the Washington Nationals (50-75) by a score of 8-1 on Tuesday evening at Nationals Park, fueled by a dominant, eight-inning outing from David Peterson and a offensive outburst at the plate.

Powered by a five-run third inning and four home runs from Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, Juan Soto, and Jeff McNeil, the Mets’ offense erupted for 11 hits. It marked the eighth time this season the club has hit four or more home runs in a game, with three of those coming within the past eight days. With the final six weeks of the season approaching, the lineup is heating up at just the right time.

The Mets also reached double-digit hits in seven of their last eight contests, a strong rebound from their earlier slump. If the offense’s resurgence can be matched by consistent pitching, this club could be peaking when it matters most.

New York will look to secure the series win against Washington on Wednesday.

(Box Score)

David Peterson delivered a gem on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits across eight innings. He struck out a season-high 10 batters while walking only one, improving to 8-5 with a 3.18 ERA on the season.

The left-hander was scoreless through seven, before running into some trouble with a leadoff double and a walk in the eighth. He then surrendered a run to break up the shoutout, but induced a double play — his second of the night and 18th of the season — to limit the damage. He then capped the frame, and his outing, with a strikeout, notching his first double-digit strikeout performance of 2024 and finishing on a high note.

Peterson has now had nine starts of six innings or more since June 8 (60 games), while the rest of the rotation have had zero. He is also the first Mets’ starter to pitch into the eighth inning since July 10 (which was also David Peterson).

Ryne Stanek closed the game in the ninth, allowing just one hit.

At the plate, the Mets broke the game open in the third inning. Francisco Lindor doubled, Soto walked, and Brandon Nimmo drove in a run with a single. Then with two outs, Jeff McNeil ripped a two-run double, and Vientos launched a two-run homer to bring him home, giving New York a strong 5-0 advantage.

The club padded the lead with solo shots from Baty (14th this year) in the sixth, Soto (31st) in the seventh, and McNeil (10th) later that inning to seal the 8-1 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

David Peterson earns Tuesday’s honor, with a dominant performance that saw him punch out a season-high 10 batters and carry a shutout into the eighth inning.
