Mets Minors Recap: McLean, Tong Dominate

0 4

Two of the Mets’ top pitching prospects, Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong, impressed again Tuesday with dominant starts. In the Dominican Summer League, top international signee Elian Peña shined as well, belting his sixth homer and swiping his 20th base in just 45 games.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (58-51) 11, Charlotte Knights (51-57) 0

Box Score

The Syracuse Mets dominated on both sides of the ball Tuesday, routing the Charlotte Knights 11-0. Jared Young extended his hitting streak to five games, collecting four extra-base hits during that span.

  • RHP Nolan McLean, 5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K (2.81 ERA)
McLean delivered another gem for the Syracuse Mets, lowering his season ERA to 2.81– his fastball topped out at 97.3 mph and he generated 15 whiffs. With the big league club looking for stability and length from its starting rotation, a 2025 promotion for McLean seems more like a matter of when than if.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (68-33) 2, Somerset Patriots (56-47) 3

Box Score

Despite Jonah Tong’s dominance, the Rumble Ponies fell 3-2 in their series opener against Somerset. Suero, after a slow start in Double-A, has begun to find his groove, collecting four hits – three for extra bases – and four RBI during a three-game hitting streak.

Carson Benge took a rare 0-for-4 in the game.

  • RHP Jonah Tong, 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K (1.58 ERA)

Jonah Tong delivered another stellar outing for the Rumble Ponies, trimming his season ERA to 1.58. Over 97 innings, he’s posted a 0.98 WHIP with 154 strikeouts (40.6 K%) while allowing just 47 hits.

High-A

Hudson Valley Renegades (62-38) 4, Brooklyn Cyclones (60-43) 2

Box Score

The Cyclones’ offense sputtered again in a 4-2 loss to the Hudson Valley Renegades, managing just six hits. First-round pick Colin Houck provided a highlight, blasting his first High-A homer and ninth of the season overall.

In his return to the Cyclones after starting the season on a rehab assignment, Louis struggled, recording just one out while surrendering three hits, a walk, and three earned runs. He now holds a 6.86 ERA over 16 appearances this season.

Single-A

St. Lucie Mets (60-42) 4, Tampa Tarpons  (48-51) 5

Box Score

  • 1B Randy Guzman 1-for-1, 2B (1.076 OPS)
  • RF John Bay1-for-3, R, HR (1), 3 RBI, BB, K (.1.329 OPS)

Despite a late ninth-inning rally, the St. Lucie Mets fell to the Tampa Tarpons, 5-4, on Tuesday. Randy Guzman, who has dominated since his promotion to Low-A on July 24th, left in the second inning with an injury. Prior to his departure, he hit a ground-rule double to raise his St. Lucie OPS to 1.076 – his season OPS sits at .889.

Despite giving up 10 hits over four innings, Hurtado delivered another solid outing for St. Lucie, marking his seventh start in eight Low-A appearances with one or fewer earned runs allowed.

The Mets Dominican Summer League teams split their Tuesday matchups; DSL Blue lost 8-5, while DSL Orange won 13-10. Elian Peña had a day, going 3-for-3, a home run, 2 walks, and 5 runs. The 17-year-old top prospect has driven his OPS up to .907 with 20 stolen bases in his first 45 professional games.
