Brandon Sproat, Carson Benge Earn July Honors

0 5

Brandon Sproat gave up two earned runs in 27 innings pitched (0.67 ERA) for Triple-A Syracuse in July. Outfielder Carson Benge slashed .397/.482/.726 with seven home runs for Double-A Binghamton last month.

The pair of prospects earned awards for their July excellence, Sproat winning the International League Pitcher of the Month honor and Benge taking the Eastern League Player of the Month.

Sproat, 24, went 2-0, struck out 33, and walked eight in his five starts. Widely considered the Mets’ top pitching prospect to start the season, the right-hander struggled in the first half, but has found his footing. Pitcher Dom Hamel, called up to the Mets from Syracuse on Monday, was asked about Sproat and pitching prospect Nolan McLean.

“Those guys just bust their butts every day,” Hamel, 26, told reporters. “Really smart players, really good. Just mature for those young kinda starters. And just really cool watching them develop and just compete their butts off and they’re getting to the fifth or sixth inning and making it easy for the bullpen.”

In the five July starts, Sproat, a second round pick in 2023 from the University of Florida, went five innings four times and seven innings once.

Benge, 22, a first round pick (19th overall) last year out of Oklahoma State University, was promoted to Binghamton in late June after hitting .302/.417/.480 with four homers, 18 doubles, five triples and 15 steals in 60 games for High-A Brooklyn.

His full slash line in 27 games for Binghamton is .356/.446/.644. He’s driven in 20 runs, stole four bases and walked (16) more than he’s struck out (15).
