Mariners acquire Eugenio Suárez from Diamondbacks
Updated Post: July 31, 00:38
The Diamondbacks received first baseman Tyler Locklear, right-handed pitcher Hunter Cranton, and righty Juan Burgos from the Mariners for Eugenio Suárez, according to Jeff Passan and Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.
Locklear was the Mariners’ ninth overall prospect. The 24-year-old was slashing .316/.401/.542 with 19 homers in 98 games this season at Triple-A. He had a cup of coffee with Seattle last season and hit .156 with two homers in 16 games.
Cranton was the Mariners’ 16th overall prospect and a 24-year-old in High-A ball with a 70-grade fastball. He projects as a major league reliever, and has only pitched 10 innings this season due to being struck on the head by a line drive during spring training.
Burgos is close to Cranton on the depth chart. He was the Mariners’ 17th overall prospect, and 25 years old. His highest graded pitch is the fastball, but it came into 2025 with a 55 overall grade. Burgos also is believed to be a reliever but had made massive strides this season due to improved command. The righty recorded a 0.64 ERA in 28 innings at Double-A this season, and had struck out eight batters in 6 2/3 innings with the M’s earlier this season.

The Mariners have added another lethal bat to their lineup this trade deadline.
Seattle is acquiring Eugenio Suárez from Arizona, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. This is the second deal between the Mariners and Diamondbacks this deadline, the first seeing Josh Naylor sent to Seattle July 24.

Suárez was having a career year before being dealt. The righty slashed .248/.320/.576 with 36 homers in 106 games with the D-backs, the most in a season before being dealt in major league history. His 87 RBIs are tied for the major league lead with Cal Raleigh.
The addition of Suárez is a finishing touch on an already dominant Mariners’ lineup. Before the addition, the M’s were fifth in the majors in homers (151) and 12th in runs (491), but were getting lackluster production from Ben Williamson (77 OPS+), Dylan Moore (81 OPS+), Miles Mastrobuoni (83 OPS+), and Donovan Solano (83 OPS+) at the hot corner.
Suárez also rejoins the Mariners after spending the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the club. During his previous time in Seattle, Suárez clubbed 53 homers, drove in 183 runs, and led the league in strikeouts in both seasons. He’ll join a lineup featuring American League MVP candidate Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez, Randy Arozarena, and former teammate Naylor. Suárez’s final hit with the Diamondbacks was a double in the ninth against the Tigers Wednesday.
