Pitching And Defense Guide Mets to 2-1 Win
In Friday night’s win over the San Francisco Giants, the New York Mets’ offense had one of its best performances of the season. On Saturday, it was the pitching and defense’s turn to put on a fine performance as the Mets beat the Giants 2-1 at Oracle Park. David Peterson gave the Mets another consistent outing. Defensively, standout plays from Mark Vientos, Brandon Nimmo, Brett Baty, and Pete Alonso helped New York. Vientos also came through with the go-ahead double.
David Peterson Solid Again
While the Mets’ starting pitching staff is looking for guys to go deep into games, Peterson has been the one pitcher who can pitch into the sixth and seventh innings. On Saturday, Peterson went six innings, allowed eight hits, one run, three walks, and struck out four. Peterson had to pitch his way out of jams. But he kept it a one-run game until the big hit from Vientos. Peterson earned his seventh win of the season, and his ERA now stands at 2.74.
Defense, Defense, Defense
The Mets’ infield defense has been iffy this season. On Saturday, the entire defense was very good. In the bottom of the first inning, the Giants had first and second with one out. Vientos made a nice catch on a hard line drive from Matt Chapman and threw to second which was low but scooped up by Baty to make the double play. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nimmo threw out Wilmer Flores as he tried to stretch a single into a double.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, with Edwin Díaz on the mound, Baty made another nice play on a Casey Schmitt line drive at third base. Jung Hoo Lee doubled, but Juan Soto made a good play as the ball came off the wall, holding Lee at second base. With two outs, Alonso made the play of the game. In a game where Alonso made a ton of good plays at first base, he leaped into the air on a Patrick Bailey line drive to save the game for the Mets.
Vientos With A Big Hit
There wasn’t much to write home about the Mets’ offense in this game. If New York had lost, we would be talking about the lineup going 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position again. New York’s offense had bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the third and did not score. In the top of the sixth inning, with Soto and Starling Marte on base with walks, Vientos roped a double down the left-field line that scored them both to give the Mets all the offense they needed, thanks to their pitching and defense.
Player of the Game: Mark Vientos
Vientos’s big hit to drive in two runs and his nice play early in the game on defense helped the Mets to a win.
On Deck
Kodai Senga takes the mound for the Mets as he looks for a bounce-back on Sunday night, as the Giants throw a bullpen game. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN at 7:10 p.m. EDT and broadcast locally on Audacy Mets Radio, WHSQ 880 AM.
