Welcome, Josh Naylor

The hottest lineup in MLB gets a bit deeper tonight.

The Mariners take on the Angels on Friday in the second game of the series. Batting fourth and playing first base will be Josh Naylor, who the Mariners picked up from the Diamondbacks on Thursday to kick off the trade deadline. It’s good timing. After surviving four consecutive series against MLB’s best teams, the Mariners are back on the road to face the bottom of the AL West. The Mariners enter Friday not only as the best offense in MLB since the beginning of June but the best road offense all season.

Friday’s game is the first chance to see how Dan Wilson uses Naylor, either as the team’s everyday first baseman or another platoon bat. The Mariners optioned Miles Mastrobuoni to make room for Naylor, potentially preserving Donovan Solano’s role on the short side of the platoon at first base. With three lefties in the Angels bullpen, we could know more about whether that platoon still exists.
