The Yankees have made their long-awaited acquisition of a third baseman, acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, who added that the Rockies will receive pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz.

It was no industry secret that the Yankees would be in the market for a third baseman after the team moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base on a full-time basis and designated DJ LeMahieu for assignment.

McMahon is slashing .217/.314/.403 so far this season, which doesn’t exactly jump off the page considering he played half his games at Coors Field. He has always been known more for his excellent glove, however, accumulating a Fielding Run Value in the 80th percentile this year with four Outs Above Average, according to Baseball Savant. Coming off a very sloppy series defensively against the first-place Toronto Blue Jays, New York has finally shored up the hot corner. McMahon squares up the ball when he makes contact, evidenced by an average exit velocity of 98 mph that places in the 98th percentile, meaning the organization is bringing in a high-upside offensive talent as well.

This does take the Yankees out of the running for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez, undoubtedly the most talked-about piece that could be moved. With less than a week to go for trades to be made before the July 31 deadline, it will be interesting to see what happens next.
