Report: Mets Have Called Marlins About Sandy Alcantara
According to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, the Mets are among the teams to have checked in on Marlins right-handed starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara. However, the chances of a deal seem slim. Miami’s asking price is extremely high, and the Mets consider the starting pitching market difficult to navigate.

Alcantara, who won the 2022 NL Cy Young Award, has struggled since returning from Tommy John surgery. His ERA is above 6.00, and he hasn’t consistently resembled the ace he once was. While there have been some encouraging signs in recent outings, he’s only shown small flashes of his top form. His main value lies in his upside and team-friendly contract, which runs through 2026 with a club option for 2027.
For the Mets, this currently feels more like due diligence rather than a serious pursuit. While they’ve “checked in” on Alcantara, there’s no indication they’re going to meet Miami’s asking price. Their rotation—despite injuries—has held together reasonably well. With Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea having worked their way back, the Mets likely don’t feel pressured to trade for a starter.
That being said, a legitimate ace could shift the Mets to a true pennant contender. While they have multiple reliable arms, the club currently lacks an ace to lead the way. Senga has the upside, but coming off an injury, it’s unclear if he’ll be that guy down the stretch. A proven ace would give the Mets a major weapon in a short series and take pressure off the bullpen. Adding a top-tier starter could help New York go toe-to-toe with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers and give them a real shot at making a deep postseason run.
Still, unless the Marlins lower their demands, the Mets are unlikely to make an all-in move for Alcantara. The front office will be careful not to overpay, especially for a pitcher whose value lies mainly in the future.
