The Mariners are hot, but the Brewers are hotter

The Mariners helped themselves out some this weekend with a series win against the division-rival Astros, but things don’t get any easier as the red-hot Brewers roll into town. Milwaukee is in the midst of a ten-game win streak, and have climbed into first place alongside the Cubs in the NL Central. Seattle will see three of their best starters this week, and both the pitching staff and the offense will need to work in tandem for the Mariners—the offense scratching across just enough runs and the pitching staff guarding those runs jealously—to take a series where offense promises to be at a premium.

Lineups:

News:

The Mariners selected lefty reliever Brandyn Garcia to the roster today, optioning reliever Juan Burgos back to Tacoma. When Garcia makes his MLB debut, he will become the eighth player to debut for Seattle this season, joining fellow pitchers Burgos, Logan Evans, Sauryn Lao, and Blas Castano, and position players Cole Young, Ben Williamson, and Rhylan Thomas. That will break a tie between the Mariners, Nationals, Angels, and Brewers for the fourth-most debuts in 2025 and put Seattle in a tie with Houston and Colorado for third place; the A’s have debuted the most players this season, with 12, while the Marlins and White Sox are close behind with 11 each.

Also, Justin Hollander met with the media pregame to give his weekly injury update.

Captain’s Log:

Dan Wilson on players like George Kirby returning from their first significant career injury:

“There’s a little more gratefulness to what you do and how you approach it. Anybody who’s been through injuries, they come back a changed person, and I think for the better. It’s a reaction to being thankful for the opportunity you’re given, and going out there and wanting to perform and doing your best all the time. I think our guys, for the most part, are that way, but there are injuries that kind of remind us of that from time to time.”

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1998: Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 40th homer of the season, becoming the quickest player ever to reach that number in a season (100 games).
