0 2

When the New York Mets released their lineup for Sunday’s finale at Citi Field against the Cincinnati Reds, there was a notable admission. First baseman Pete Alonso was missing from the lineup card, for the first time this season.

Prior to the game, manager Carlos Mendoza spoke to the media and confirmed Alonso is being listed as, “day-to-day,” due to a right hand contusion. He further described the that the contusion, which is the medical term for a bruise, is at the base of Alonso’s thumb. Mendoza didn’t confirm when the injury exactly happened, but alluded to the possibility it was due it being, “jammed a couple of times.”

The X-rays were encouragingly negative.

Alonso, along with Juan Soto, have been by far the Mets’ best players at the plate. Alonso is slashing .276/.370/.522 (.892 OPS) with 21 home runs and 77 RBIs through 99 games. However, recently, he has been struggling, going 2-for-25 since July 10.

Mark Vientos has replaced Alonso at first base for Sunday’s game. He is batting fourth in the lineup.
