MMO Roundtable: Our Favorite David Wright Memories

0 3

It’s happening this weekend – David Wright‘s number 5 is getting retired. With that, he’ll enter the Mets Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Citi Field this Saturday, July 19th. It’s sure to be an emotional one for our Captain, and for most Mets fans, including us here at Metsmerized. As we celebrate No. 5, here’s a look back at our favorite memories of him.

Christian De Block

Being in the building for David’s final game was absolutely special. Watching an icon of the franchise take the field one last time was bittersweet. One of the coolest memories I have had as a Mets fan. Definitely an experience I will never forget.

Chris Bello

My favorite memory of David Wright was watching him celebrate with Daniel Murphy at Wrigley after winning the NLCS. He had worked incredibly hard to get on the field that year and seeing him be able to play and win a pennant was truly special.

David Melendi

The home run in Game 3 of the 2015 World Series. Down two games, but back home, when Wright homered it felt like the Mets were back in the series. Of course, it was a shame that ended up being the Mets’ only win.

Mathias Altman-Kurosaki

It’s difficult for me to pick a definitive favorite David Wright moment. I’ll go with his home run in Game 3 of the 2015 World Series. He’d worked his tail off his entire career to make it to the Fall Classic, and was able to have his moment in front of the home crowd after missing most of the year due to injury. I just wish the Mets were able to win him a ring.

David Wright was one of the first players who truly helped me fall in love with baseball. From MLB: The Show to seeing him shine on the Mets, he was always someone I tried to emulate when I played the game. But the true moment was seeing him hit that home run in the 2015 playoffs. For a franchise icon to finally get to shine on the biggest stage, there was nothing more special than that.

Johnluke Chaparro

My favorite David Wright moment came in 2016. Now, up until this point, we all knew we were on borrowed time with him. His injury was a ticking time bomb and we knew he was going to hang em up at some point. He was the first prospect I really followed from start to finish that was our own. The ’60s fans had Seaver, the ’80s fans had Doc and Darryl, and we had Wright. He was OUR guy for the millennial generation. That being said, the moment I’m picking was his walk-off bases-loaded hit against the Brewers. I was at Citi Field that day and it had just begun to drizzle a bit. It was a solid at-bat by Wright, and on a full-count pitch, was able to knock it into the outfield and in the gap to win it. I was so happy because Wright is one of my favorites and he was still able to perform in a tough spot, despite the injuries. The moment felt very full circle for me as a longtime fan. All those games, in person at Shea or on TV, seeing Wright be the guy, made it all more special.

Nick Kalantzopoulos

I remember being at David Wright’s last game. During the national anthem, I turned around and saw a sold-out stadium, in an otherwise lost season, all there for a single person. That moment gave me chills and it’s one I’ll never forget.

Rafael González

It’s now featured on every David Wright highlight reel, but for me, it’s the home run he hit in his first at-bat back from injury during the 2015 World Series run that stands out. It perfectly exemplified Wright’s knack for rising to the occasion. Fittingly, despite missing the start of the team’s dominant stretch, it’s the Captain’s moment that captures just how unstoppable they had become. Gary Cohen’s home run call—ending with a guttural “with THUNDER!”—is forever etched in my Mets memory bank.

Allison Waxman

It’s so hard to pick. I’d have to go with the homer in Philly after returning from the IL OR the game against the Nats with the iconic fist pump in 2015. Man, you knew something special was coming in that swing and how hard he had worked back from injury for it. I remember jumping up from my couch at home and pumping my fist along with him, screaming at the top of my lungs. Iconic. You could tell in those moments how much it meant to him being a Met and being a part of that team. That’s why he was our captain.

Michelle Ioannou

All of the above is great – and will be ingrained in my head forever. But I have to talk about an off-the-field David Wright story. As many of you know, my brother unfortunately lost his battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in October 2019. Prior to that, he met Wright at a Muscular Dystrophy Association event – and had the opportunity to bowl with the Captain, while he was still playing for the Mets, at Chelsea Piers. It was one of the biggest and best experiences my brother had, and I cherish it to this day; just as much as I cherish the signed David Wright baseball he brought me back from that event. Thank you David, for being one of the best memories of my brother.
