Royals acquire Adam Frazier from the Pirates
This is not a re-run.
The Royals have re-acquired Adam Frazier from the Pirates in exchange for Cam Devanney, according to Fansided reporter Robert Murray. Frazier was hitting .255/.318/.336 with three home runs and seven steals in 78 games for the Pirates. He spent last year with the Royals, hitting .202/.282/.294 in 104 games.
The 33-year-old has been lauded for his clubhouse leadership, and his numbers last year appear to be an aberration. But the left-handed hitter has an OPS+ of 83, not exactly a solution for a team struggling on offense. Frazier does provide positional versatility with the ability to play second base and outfield. If he plays mostly against right-handed pitchers, he could be a decent on-base guy - he has hit .267/.326/.352 so far against them this year.
Devanney was hitting .272/.366/.565 with 18 home runs in Triple-A Omaha, and was called up last week, but did not appear in a game for the Royals. The 28-year-old was acquired from the Brewers after the 2023 season in a trade for reliever Taylor Clarke.
Frazier signed a one-year, $1.525 million deal with the Pirates before the season, which the Royals will be obligated to pay the remainder of this season. He is a 10-year veteran and former All-Star who has a career line of .263/.327/.382.
His signing may be an indication that the Royals do not expect Michael Massey back for a while. Massey has been out since June 7 with a back injury, and suffered a setback on July 4 when he suffered a hairline wrist fracture when he was hit by a pitch on rehab assignment. Frazier gives the Royals another left-handed option off the bench that can get on base.
