To buy or to sell?

The bullpen fell apart late last night against the Mets.

“I mean, we would definitely want to go to him there,” Quatraro said of Erceg postgame. “He came off the off day and his back was a little tight and we needed to stay away from him today.”

When things got hairy, Quatraro went with All-Star closer Carlos Estévez to attempt to clean up the eighth inning.

The strategy did not work.

Jackson Stone writes about whether there is pressure to win now before the trade deadline.

Just 20-34 against teams over .500 and 6-16 in their past 22 games at Kauffman Stadium, the Royals simply have to execute this month to provide the front office reason to buy at the Deadline.

“We’re trying to win every night,” Quatraro said. “There’s no different pressure on tonight’s game than there was on [Wednesday’s] game or tomorrow’s game. We can only win one game a day, right? And that’s what our goal is. There’s no additional pressure on these games as any others.”

Carlos Estévez was grateful at his All-Star selection, writes Jaylon Thompson.

“It’s really special man,” Estévez said. “I said it before, every time you get the chance to be on that experience, you know, it’s just amazing. I really like it and I’m really excited. … When it happened, I’m like OK, some justice. I like that.”

Maikel Garcia was overjoyed by getting selected.

Garcia got to share the moment with his family. He heard from his cousin and former Royals star Alcides Escobar. He also got a phone call from his cousin and Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr.

Those calls resonated with Garcia. It gave him a chance to reflect on his journey from Venezuela to the big leagues. And it served as the coronation of a lifelong dream becoming reality.

“I don’t know man, I can’t explain it,” Garcia said. “Being from our hometown and now we are a part of the best league in the world. Like being an All-Star, I can’t believe it.”

David Lesky thinks the Royals could look to add long-term pieces at the deadline.

The Royals have an opportunity to improve their chances by simply adding a very small amount of offense. Of course, that said, they’re in a spot where they’re on the outside looking in and a good chunk less than half the season remains. So they have to be smart.

I’m not saying they should sell, though I still think they need to be looking at being creative at the very least. I am saying that they shouldn’t give up any real assets for a player who isn’t under team control through at least 2026. But I think they’ve done enough for this year to warrant a move or maybe two that can act as almost offseason shopping in July while potentially giving them a shot to make a run that seemed impossible even a week and a half ago. So the end goal is boosting next year’s team (and beyond with some) but with the idea that it can help them in 2025 too.

The Royals have reportedly sent a term sheet to Clay County officials outlining a potential deal on a stadium.

Kehoe is scheduled to travel to North Kansas City later on Friday to promote the legislation. One Missouri official said Kehoe’s visit, coupled with the news of the term sheet, have ramped up the possibility of the Royals moving to Clay County.

“I think all signs point to that,” said Sen. Maggie Nurrenbern, a Kansas City Democrat. “I hope that we hear something officially from the Royals very soon on this. I think the term sheet, obviously, is really important.”
