Elephant Rumblings: Sevy trade rumors abound
MLB news roundup
Happy Monday, Athletics Nation!
Luis Severino hasn’t been shy about his disdain for pitching at Sutter Health Park. Apparently, Sevy’s complaints have irked the A’s brass to the point that they “can’t wait” to trade the A’s righty, per Bob Nightengale at USA Today.
After getting pummeled at Yankee Stadium yesterday, Severino declined to make any conciliatory statements about playing in Sacramento, or towards the team’s management. He essentially said he’s just being honest about his perspective, and that it isn’t his job to worry about getting traded or the rumors that are swirling about.

That’s fair enough, really. I wouldn’t be thrilled to pitch in a Triple-A park, either, unless maybe you paid me $67 million dollars to do it.
My problems with Severino are that he isn’t really giving the A’s their money worth in terms of performance, and it does seem like a bit of a cop out to blame the ballpark for being so bad at home instead of focusing on what adjustments he might make to improve. He also knew what he was signing up for when he inked his deal with the A’s.
Much is being made of Sevy’s home/away splits, and it’s true that he had a 2.27 ERA on the road—before giving up seven runs at Yankee Stadium yesterday, anyway. But when Sevy loses at home, he’s often getting outgunned by opposing pitchers; everyone in the game faces the same ballpark conditions.
Beyond that, Luis’s away ERA may be a bit of a fluke. Prior to yesterday’s games, his K percentage is just 12.9% and his xFIP is 4.75 in away games prior to yesterday’s start in The Bronx. Overall, he now has a 5.18 ERA in 2025.
I might well be happy to get traded if I were Sevy, too. He’s already guaranteed his money, and if he’s not gelling with the organization, why not want to get traded to a contender? But personally, I will also not be mad at all if the A’s end up trading Luis Severino unless they have to eat a ton of his salary. How about you, AN? Should Sevy stay, or should he go now?
