Frankie Montas Set to Join Mets

0 1

Carlos Mendoza announced ahead of Thursday’s game against the Braves that Frankie Montas will join the Mets after completing his rehab program. Mendoza notes there is a “good chance” that Frankie Montas will join the rotation next week.

It’s been a tumultuous rehab process for Montas, who struggled mightily in his six outings in the minors. The Mets righty gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings for High-A Brooklyn and then 21 runs in 14 1/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse. The team was a little more encouraged by Montas’s final rehab start on Wednesday, however.

“I watched that outing from last night. First time through the lineup was a lot better yesterday, especially with the secondary pitches,” Mendoza told reporters, “We feel like mechanically he’s getting there.”

The Mets signed Montas early in the offseason to a two-year, $34 million deal, and with Montas’ rehab clock set to expire, the team had to bring him up. Considering his status in the big leagues and the amount of money he’s making, the team is relying on him to pitch better, especially with the injuries to Tylor Megill and Kodai Senga.

“Look, you know, we need starters here,” Mendoza said, “We signed him to be a starter for this team, and we’re going to give him a chance.”

In his nine-year career, the 32-year-old owns a 4.09 ERA through 160 games, where he’s struck out 760 batters. Between the Reds and Brewers in 2024, Montas posted a 4.84 ERA. In 30 combined starts, he compiled 148 punchouts in just under 153 innings of work.
