The Red Sox (and their fans) roll into town

The last time the Mariners and Rex Sox faced off this season, the Mariners were in the middle of a hot stretch of play. Ben Williamson was punching above his weight as a rookie, Jorge Polanco was hitting like Aaron Judge, and the whole lineup was doing damage. Fast forward a month and the Mariners have wilted from their fast start, while the Red Sox... what’s that about a trade, you say?

Lineups:

The departure of Rafael Devers isn’t the only big move in this series; the Mariners are reinstating Logan Gilbert to make tonight’s start. Missed ya, Big Log.

After some high-profile errors in the field, Kristian Campbell is serving as DH tonight and batting out of the nine-hole to take advantage of his speed.

News:

Logan Gilbert is expected to get around 80 pitches tonight. In order to make room for Gilbert on the roster, the team optioned reliever Jackson Kowar to Tacoma.

If you want to read some more about the Rafael Devers trade, our friends at Over the Monster have quite a bit about it.

Captain’s Log:

“I can’t say enough about the job that Logan Evans did in his stead—he pitched really, really well—but to get Logan Gilbert back out there tonight, at home especially, I think it’s a really good moment, and one that can definitely give you a little bit of a lift.” -Dan Wilson

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1987: Exactly two weeks after being selected first overall in the MLB draft, a Mariners prospect named Ken Griffey Jr. played his first professional game in Bellingham for the “Baby Ms.” He would go hitless in the game.
  • 1990: Matt Young outduels Nolan Ryan in a complete-game effort as the Mariners defeat the Rangers, 5-0
  • 2001: John Olerud hits for the cycle in a 9-2 win over the Padres. It’s the second cycle of Olerud’s career, and the third-ever hit by a member of the Mariners.
  • 2003: John Olerud collects his 2,000th career hit – a game-tying two run homer off John Lackey – in the 4th inning of a 6-3 win vs. Anaheim.
  • 2018: The Mariners shut out the Red Sox, 1-0, at Safeco Field, in what is probably Wade LeBlanc’s finest game ever pitched as a Mariner. Nelson Cruz drives in the lone run of the game.
