Saratoga Springs, Spa Catholic and North Warren baseball advance to state championship games
VESTAL, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Catholic and North Warren baseball teams all advanced through the state semifinals on Friday. All three teams will play for their respective championships on Saturday.
Saratoga Springs started the day with a thrilling 2-1 win in 10 innings over Niagara Falls. Jack Rigabar delivered a walk-off double to the right-center field gap, scoring Raul Rodriguez from first base to win the game.
The pitching was brilliant for Saratoga all day, Thomas McNamara threw six innings, allowing just the one run, while striking out seve. Charlie Greiner then tossed four scoreless innings in relief, while striking out six. The Blue Streaks will face Ketcham from Section 1 at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The game will be played at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton.
Spa Catholic also got the job done in the semifinals, edging Burke Catholic, 5-2. Entering the seventh inning in a 2-2 tie, the Saints scored three runs in their final trip to the plate to take the lead and advance.
The pitching was also strong for Spa Catholic. After surrendering two runs in the first inning (only one of them earned), Carson Moser and Luke Dejnozka did not allow another run the rest of the game. The Saints will face Deposit-Hancock from Section 4 on Saturday in the championship. That game will take place at 4 p.m. at Binghamton University.
North Warren also punched its ticket to the title game on Friday with a 5-2 win over Smithtown Christian of Section 11. The Cougars will match up with Oriskany from Section 3 in the championship. That game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Mirabito Stadium.
Mechanicville also took the field in the semifinals, but fell to Babylon, 5-4, in a Class B semifinal battle.
