Mets Minors Recap: Frankie Montas Struggles in Syracuse

0 6

Frankie Montas hasn’t been sharp in any of his five minor-league outings and Friday night was his worst performance yet. The nine-year veteran was lit up for eight runs in 1 2/3 innings. Before the game, David Stearns said Montas is “still feeling his way back” from the lat injury that was discovered after he felt pain in a February bullpen session before spring training. He will likely have another rehab appearance next week.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (29-38) 3, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (33-31) 10

Box Score

Meneses drove in a run with his 24th double, which leads the International League. Gilbert’s 10th double was off the wall in right.

The Mets signed Montas to a two-year, $34 million contract in December after he went 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 30 starts combined for the Brewers and Reds last year. Montas, 32, can opt out of the deal after this season.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (41-19) 6, Richmond Flying Squirrels (18-43) 5, 10 innings

Box Score

Parada’s go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th helped clinch a playoff spot for Binghamton. He also homered for the second straight game. Smith’s homer was his sixth extra-base hit in his last eight games.

Pintaro, 27, has not allowed a run in three of his last four starts. He has struck out 51 in 38.2 IP.

High-A

Asheville Tourists (27-34) 4, Brooklyn Cyclones (41-20) 3

Box Score

Ewing, Benge, and Reimer entered Friday ranked first, third, and fourth in batting average in the South Atlantic League, but Asheville kept them at bay and held the Cyclones to just three singles. Troy Schreffler (1-for-3) drove in two.

Watson was making his second start for Brooklyn after getting promoted from St. Lucie. He fanned eight in both outings, but this one was a lot better (no runs, two hits) than his first (three runs, 10 hits). Herrera, 25, has 23 strikeouts in 19 IP.

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (33-27) 6, Daytona Tortugas (26-35) 5

Box Score

Houck, 20, a first-round pick out of high school in the 2023 draft, is hitting .286 in June after hitting .261 in May and .190 in April. His OPS was .610 in 471 plate appearances last year for St. Lucie.

Austin, 23, has given up two earned runs or fewer in four consecutive outings.

Rookie Ball Florida Complex League

FCL Cardinals (12-12) 4, FCL Mets (9-14) 1

Box Score

The Mets had more errors on pick-off attempts (three) than hits (two). Hard to win a game that way.

Hurtado, a 20-year-old Cuban, has racked up 25 strikeouts in 19 IP while giving up just one earned run. It’s an impressive turnaround from his 2024 in the FCL when he gave up 11 earned runs in 15.2 IP (6.32 ERA).

Dominican Summer League

DSL Cardinals (5-4) 3, DSL Mets Orange (6-3) 4

Box Score

Elian Peña went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. The 17-year-old shortstop is off to an 0-for-26 start in nine DSL games with seven strikeouts and three walks. He has three steals. Outfielder Heriberto Rincon went 1-for-3 with a run. He’s hitting .414 (12-for-29) with nine steals. Josmir Reyes (2-for-3, run, two RBIs, stolen base) is 11-for-19 with a 1.488 OPS.

DSL Mets Blue (2-7) 11, DSL Yankees (3-5) 3

Box Score

Yunior Amparo went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. The 18-year-old from the Dominican Republic who plays first and third is 8-for-13 (.615) with a home run and a 1.724 OPS in seven games. Yorber Semprun, a 17-year-old Venezuelan who plays second, third, and short, went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored, a stolen base, and five RBIs.
