Siri Suffers Setback, Winker’s Rehab Assignment Not Imminent

0 7

Ahead of the club’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns spoke to members of the media and gave some updates on the injury status of several players.

Designated hitter/outfielder Jesse Winker is still “multiple weeks” away from a rehab assignment, according to Stearns. Winker strained his right oblique the day of his first start in the outfield this season on May 4.

Winker got off to a solid start to the season at the plate with an OPS+ of 112. It has been a game of musical chairs to replace his spot in the lineup thus far, with Jared Young currently serving as the primary DH against right-handed pitching.

Stearns also gave a grim update regarding Jose Siri‘s progression back from injury. What was initially a quick recovery has stalled, after he had a setback with his fractured left tibia. The outfielder, who was hit by his own foul ball during an April 12 game against the Athletics, is being backed off baseball activities after re-imaging showed that the bone had not healed as well as the team had hoped.

The Mets have done a better job of replacing Siri’s production, with Tyrone Taylor and Jeff McNeil doing yeoman’s work in center field.

Stearns also said that Frankie Montas will likely have another rehab outing next week after his start on Friday, Brooks Raley could start a rehab assignment next week, and that the team still doesn’t know the severity of Kodai Senga‘s hamstring injury that he sustained in the Mets’ series finale against the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
