The Mets look to stretch their win streak to seven games as they welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to Citi Field tonight!

The Mets are rolling right now coming off of consecutive sweeps against the Rockies and Nationals, the latter of which they capped off with a victory on Thursday despite Kodai Senga going down with a right hamstring strain. The Rays are also hot, winning six of seven games from June 3 through June 9 before losing two games in a row to the Boston Red Sox this week. Whose momentum will win out this weekend?

Clay Holmes has officially hit a career-high innings total in the majors at 73 1/3. In 2016, he pitched 136 1/3 innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Double-A affiliate, the Altoona Curve, which is the most in a single season throughout his professional career up to this point.

This season, Holmes has a 2.95 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 1.186 WHIP and a 128 ERA+. He is coming off of another strong start where he held the Rockies to only one run on nine hits and no walks over six innings.

June has been interesting for him – he’s had both his worst and best starts of the season this month. He started out by tossing seven innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out 10 batters against the Houston Astros. The following outing, he allowed seven runs on six hits and two walks over four innings vs. the Miami Marlins.

Game Notes

• Frankie Montas, who should help the Mets mitigate Senga’s absence, will make the fifth start of his rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse tonight as he continues to work his way back from a lat strain.
• Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters that left-handed reliever Brooks Raley could begin a rehab assignment next week if everything goes well, and that it will be a full ramp-up for the 36-year-old after undergoing Tommy John surgery last May.
• Ryan Clifford homered for the fourth time in six games while Jett Williams had another big performance for Double-A Binghamton on Thursday. For more, check out our minor league recap!

Three Things To Watch For

1. Keeping the ball in the yard. Holmes has allowed quite a few home runs recently. Hitters have eight on the season against him, and they have all happened since May 9. The Rays are tied for No. 15 in the majors for home runs, so they aren’t the most dangerous team that Holmes has faced this season in that regard.
2. Stolen Bases. Soto stole his eighth base of the season Thursday, which is notable because he only stole seven in 2024. The Mets now have 58 stolen bases on the season, good for No. 10 in the league. This is a notable shift for the Mets, who finished No. 16 in stolen bases in 2024. Across the diamond, stolen bases are the Rays thing. They lead the majors with 96, 10 more than the Milwaukee Brewers in second place.
3. Brandon Nimmo is getting hot. Nimmo went 2-for-4 Thursday with a home run. It was his third home run over his last two games and his second consecutive game with multiple hits. Nimmo and Soto heating up at the same time is dramatically increasing the Mets’ run scoring abilities.
