Mets Minors Recap: Jett Williams Homers Twice

0 45

Mets affiliates struggled pitching today, with only St. Lucie earning the win in a 16-10 slugfest against Daytona. Jett Williams clubbed two solo home runs in a game Binghamton only managed four hits, Jacob Reimer remained hot in a Brooklyn win, and Drew Gilbert hit a home run, but Syracuse fell short against the RailRiders.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (29-36) 5, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (31-31) 7

BOX SCORE

  • CF Drew Gilbert – 1-for-4, 1 R, HR (4), 2 RBI (21), 1 BB, 1 K (.679 OPS)
  • DH Joey Meneses – 2-for-4, 2B, 1 K (.786 OPS)
  • 2B Luke Ritter – 2-for-4, 2 K (.729 OPS)
  • 3B David Villar – 1-for-4, 1 R, HR (3), 1 RBI (6), 2 K (.857 OPS)

Syracuse attempted a ninth-inning comeback, but fell short on Wednesday. Every player on Syracuse managed a hit. Drew Gilbert hasn’t been hitting for average, but already has hit as many home runs in June (two) as he did in May, and it’s only June 11. Hopefully, Gilbert can find the power and make some solid contact, as his OPS still sits below .700. Travis Jankowski, in his first game with Syracuse, went 1-for-5 with an RBI.

  • RHP Dom Hamel (4.68 ERA)  1 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 1 HR allowed (27 of 34 pitches for strikes)
  • LHP Felipe De La Cruz (9.35 ERA) 2/3 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 HR allowed

Syracuse gave up four home runs on the day, with Dom Hamel only going 1 2/3 innings, but throwing 27 of his 34 pitches for strikes. Felipe De La Cruz has been hit hard in his last two outings, allowing nine runs in 2 2/3 innings. Every pitcher from the fourth inning on did not allow a run, but seven pitchers were used to get out of the game.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (39-19) 2, Richmond Flying Squirrels (18-41) 5

Jett Williams is really picking up the pace, slashing .333/486/.667 in June with seven walks and seven steals and five of his nine hits going for extra bases. He also got the start at second base on Wednesday. Binghamton had just six baserunners on the day. JT Schwartz has struggled in his return to Double-A, slashing .195/.268/.379 with 24 strikeouts in 87 at-bats.

  • LHP Zach Thornton (2.49 ERA) 5 1/3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR (65 of 100 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Douglas Orellana (2.19 ERA) 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Ryan Lambert (2.40 ERA) 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K

Zach Thornton had his worst outing since May 7th and still went five innings, allowing only three runs. He threw 100 pitches on the day, which is a big positive to take from the game. Douglas Orellana has been scored upon in his last two outings. Ryan Lambert keeps marching along in Double-A, putting together another scoreless outing with a strikeout. In four innings in June, he has allowed a .154 batting average.

High-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (41-18) 4, Asheville Tourists (25-34) 2

BOX SCORE

  • RF A.J. Ewing – 0-for-2, 1 R, SB (29), 2 BB, 2 K (.847 OPS)
  • Chris Suero – 0-for-4, 3 K (.805 OPS)
  • 2B  Marco Vargas – 2-for-3, 2B, SB (17), 1 BB, (.610 OPS)
  • 1B Jacob Reimer – 2-for-4, 3B, 1 R, 1 RBI (38), 1 K (.977 OPS)
  • CF Carson Benge – 1-for-4, 2B, 1 RBI (34), 2 K (.924 OPS)

The Cyclones staged an eighth inning rally to take the lead and win the game on Wednesday, despite only six hits, three of them went for extra bases, and they stole three bases on the day as well. Boston Baro got the start and hit leadoff and went 1-for-4 with two RBI. His OPS is still under .600, and the 2025 season has seen him struggle with his plate discipline, although he already has as many walks (six) in June as he did in May.

  • RHP Noah Hall (2.56 ERA) 4 1/3 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR allowed (39 of 68 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Brian Metoyer (1.17 ERA) 1 2/3 IP, 1 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Raimon Gomez (7.56 ERA) 1 IP, 1 K

Noah Hall scattered seven hits over four and one-third innings, and only really started struggling in the fifth inning, walking two hitters and allowing two extra base hits. Brian Metoyer has been lights-out, with his breaking pitches working. Metoyer is another great comeback story for the Mets’ farm system after undergoing two Tommy John surgeries; he is back on the mound, throwing yo-yo curveballs and making hitters look foolish.

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (32-26) 16, Daytona Tortugas (25-34) 10

BOX SCORE

  • 2B Trey Snyder – 3-for-5, 3B, 1 R, 1 RBI (24), 2 SB (20), 1 B, 1 K (.697 OPS)
  • SS Jeremy Rodriguez – 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI (16), SB (15), 2 BB (.612 OPS)
  • 3B Colin Houck – 0-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI (30), SB (8), 1 BB, 2 K (.741 OPS)
  • Daiverson Gutierrez – 2-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI (21), SB (2), 2 BB, 1 K (.703 OPS)
  • DH Trace Willhoite – 4-for-5, 2B, 2 R, 4 RBI (35), 1 BB (.853 OPS)
  • RF Simon Juan – 1-for-6, 1 R, HR (5), 3 RBI (23), 1 K (.622 OPS)

This was a wild game offensively, with 16 runs on 16 hits and 11 walks, and six stolen bases as well. Every hitter other than Colin Houck managed at least one hit, with five St. Lucie players getting at least two. Trace Willhoite has been strong the entire season and may get the call-up to Brooklyn soon due to his success. Jeremy Rodriguez has been coming around slowly, and despite his struggles, is still walking a lot. The 18-year-old is sporting a .350 OBP on the season despite only a .235 batting average.

  • RHP Irving Cota (3.16 ERA) 3 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K (37 of 52 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Jose Chirinos (3.38 ERA) 3 1/3 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

On the pitching side, the stat lines were not as good. Jose Chirinos earned his first win of the season, and only one St. Lucie pitcher would not allow a run. Juan Arnaud has struck out 26 batters in 17 2/3 innings, while walking eight. 2023 11th-round pick Brett Banks has struck out nine with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings.

Florida Coast League

FCL Mets (9-14) 6, FCL Nationals (16-10) 7

BOX SCORE

Jace Hampson had his second straight start of at least four innings and allowing less than two runs. After an awful May, Bohan Adderley has started June on fire, slashing .429/.529/.643 while stealing two bases and walking as many times as he has struck out (three). Edward Lantigua has 19 hits on the season, and only two have gone for extra bases.
