Cincinnati Takes the Ohio Cup in 2025

The Guardians lost game one of a three game set against the Reds, surrendering the coveted Ohio Cup for the first time since 2014. This brings the Guardians to 4-6 in their last 10 games and 8 games back of the Detroit Tigers.

Cleveland was the only AL Central team to play yesterday. Today the Tigers start a 3 game series against the scuffling Orioles, the Twins start a three game series against the Rangers and their abysmal offense, and the Royals take on the Yankees for a three game series. The Guardians will have to pick up their play to keep the gap from growing too wide.

Jose Ramirez was able to extend his on base streak to 35 games as well as collect a stolen base, putting him on pace for a career high 48 steals. Bo Naylor homered in his second straight game. Naylor is slashing .300/.462/.600 in the month of June.

Stephen Vogt wasn’t too happy with his teams performance, in the post-game he said: “We did not play our brand of baseball tonight. At all. This was the first night I’ve watched us when we didn’t look like ourselves”. Read the game summary to know where his frustration comes from.

To be honest I think the Guardians looked like they usually do when they lose extremely winnable games...

Tonight Slade Cecconi faces off against LHP Andrew Abbot. Abbot has been dynamite this year pitching to a 2.18 ERA and allowing less than a 30% hard hit rate. Earlier this season Abbot held the Guardians scoreless in 5 innings of work allowing only two hard hit balls. On the bright side, the lineup he faced did not feature lefty mashers David Fry and Lane Thomas, and Abbot is coming off his worst outing of the year: 6 IP with 5 ER against the Brewers.

Around the League:

  • Local boy Dominic Canzone hit a 450 game tying home run in the 9th for the Mariners
  • Josh Naylor one-upped Canzone with a walk-off grand slam to top Seattle in the 11th
  • Dodgers take game one 8-7 in the first series between them and the Padres of 2025
  • Electric young arm Eury Perez returns from Tommy John Surgery for the Marlins
  • Denzel Clark of the Athletics made an incredible catch (again) to rob a home run
