Mauricio Homers, Offense Backs Holmes in Win
Saturday’s win over the Rockies didn’t require the flair for dramatics like Friday.
There was no late double that tied the game in the twilight innings. There was no pinch hit, go ahead double that prevented a loss to potentially the worst team that baseball has even seen.

Instead, the Mets handled business. The offense delivered, first highlighted by Francisco Lindor. The shortstop had sat the previous two games with his broken pinkie toe, but started the game with two singles and stolen bases in his first two at-bats. He would finish the night 3-for-5 before exiting the game for a defensive replacement in the eighth.
The rest of the night was highlighted by solo homers and clutch hitting. The power all came versus Germán Márquez, who got the start over Carson Palmquist as the Rockies attempted to reset their rotation. Jared Young and Jeff McNeil — who both sat against Palmquist in his start in New York — both lofted homers, as well as recently hot Ronny Mauricio.
Mauricio got the power party started, mashing a titanic 456-foot homer. The blast gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the third, and continued a hot stretch that started with his double in Friday’s win.
Overall, Mauricio had his best night at the plate in 2025. He finished the night 2-for-4 with a homer and single, hit at 110 miles per hour and 99.7 mph respectively.
The raw power was at full display. And also reminded lots of people about the pedigree that Mauricio carried before enduring a season-ending injury in Winter ball before the 2024 season.
Mauricio might be an immediate answer to third base, a position the Mets have struggled at throughout the 2025 season. Mark Vientos is injured, and Brett Baty entered Saturday in a 2-for-23 skid. The 24-year-old has the potential to reenter the open race for third base, and his night at the plate Saturday might have been the beginning of his case.
Outside the three solo home runs, the Mets also scored four runs with small ball. The Mets tacked on their first non-homer run in the fifth via a single by Brandon Nimmo, two in the seventh via a sacrifice fly from Tyrone Taylor and single from Luis Torrens, and one more in the eighth via a double by Nimmo.

Overall, the Mets went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. A .214 batting average is nothing to brag about, but it’s hard to complain about a game where you score eight runs.
Especially the night provided by Nimmo. The lefty came into the night batting only .231 with runners in scoring position, but tonight accounted for two of the three hits with runners in scoring position, along with a vintage walk sprinkled in he took in the seventh.
Perhaps lost in the offensive explosion Saturday was the start by Clay Holmes. The righty went a season-high seven innings in his last start — also against the Rockies — and one-upped himself Saturday.
Holmes wasn’t masterful, but gutted his way through six innings in the mountains. He gave up only one run despite allowing nine hits. The Rockies had traffic on the bases every inning except the second versus Holmes, yet still only scored one run via a Ryan McMahon solo home run.
The performance lowered Holmes’ ERA to 2.95, and was another pin a successful first half for Holmes. He’s now 22nd overall in starter ERA in the majors and one of four Mets starters who have ERAs under three.
Holmes turned the ball over to José Buttó and José Castillo, who both turned in scoreless outings over three innings of work. Buttó was the long man, who went two scoreless while allowing only one base runner.
The Mets improved to 17 games over .500, and picked up a game over the Phillies, who lost a consecutive game to the Pirates. The club also lowered their starter ERA to 2.84, the best overall figure in the majors.
Player of the Game
Ronny Mauricio was the player of the game Saturday. After starting the season 0-for-11, Mauricio has clubbed a double, homer, and single, improving his season batting average to .188. The homer tonight was hit 456 feet.
On Deck
The Mets will face the Rockies for a final time tomorrow at 3:10 PM. Tylor Megill takes the ball for the Mets and will face Chase Dollander. The Mets haven’t faced Dollander this season, but the rookie comes into Sunday with a 6.26 ERA. Sunday’s affair will be televised on WPIX 11 and broadcast on Audacy Mets Radio WHSQ 880 AM.
