Chicago promotes backstop as the rebuild begins to take shape

Another piece of the rebuild 2.0 has arrived on the South Side, as Kyle Teel has officially been called up to Chicago. MLB Pipeline’s No. 26 overall prospect, Teel, is expected to make his on-field debut tonight against the Kansas City Royals. His arrival sparks excitement among Sox fans thirsting for their next superstar. The 23-year-old joins Edgar Quero as the young and intriguing catching tandem of the future.

Teel’s arrival, a centerpiece of the Garrett Crochet trade, offers fans another glimpse into the potential of this new core. So far in 2025, Teel has been an absolute force for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, slashing an impressive .295/.394/.492 with eight home runs, 10 doubles, 30 RBIs, and seven stolen bases over 50 games. He’s demonstrated an exceptional eye at the plate as well, drawing 30 walks. The lefty has also been on a hot streak recently, earning his second International League Player of the Week honors for May 19-25 after a blistering stretch where he hit .500/.636/1.188 with three dingers, two doubles, six RBI, and six walks. Oh, and there was also a 19-game hitting streak earlier in the season — a big league promotion was way overdue! And these videos never get old.

Beyond the bat, Teel is surprisingly athletic for a backstop, and with some initial adjustments, his defensive skills have steadily improved, featuring a strong arm and accurate fielding with a .990 FPCT. He is also reported to have a high baseball IQ and respectable leadership qualities, all characteristics that point to the possibility that the South Siders could have yet another well-rounded major league catcher for years to come. Welcome to Chicago, Kyle. The South Side fans are more than ready for you!
