Mariners look to bounce back against Baltimore

The Mariners will need to play better tonight.

The Mariners dropped Tuesday’s series opener 5-1 in a sluggish game, falling to second place in the AL West by a fraction. With an Astros loss in Pittsburgh earlier this evening, the Mariners have a chance to leapfrog back into first place with a win tonight. Emerson Hancock takes the mound for the Mariners, and lefty Cade Povich takes the mound for the Orioles. Both starters have Baseball Savant profiles adorned in a pessimistic shade of blue, but both have looked solid at times this year as well.

The Orioles started the season 16-34 and at one point looked like an “opportunity” on the Mariners schedule. But the Orioles have won seven of their last nine, allowing two or fewer runs in each victory. The Mariners have lost their last four series to the Orioles dating back to 2023, and they’ll have to win tonight and tomorrow to avoid extending the streak.

Lineups

News

  • Logan Gilbert makes his second rehab start in Tacoma this evening. The goal is for him to throw 60-65 pitches.
  • Casey Legumina is back with the team to replace Collin Snider, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right forearm flexor strain.

Captain’s Log:

Mariners pitchers worked on their fielding today, which is rarity this time of year. From Dan Wilson:

“We haven’t done that since spring training, and we had a chance for the pitchers to get in a little PFP here, so we’re taking advantage of being at home here and getting them a chance to get out on the mound and just be a little more athletic here.” As for who did the best: “Bryan Woo has wowed us in the past, so he probably gets the A+, but [Eduard] Bazardo looked pretty good today, too.”
