The Barons went 6-0, but Knights catcher Kyle Teel had the most dominant individual performance

The Knights split another series to remain just one game below .500.

Catcher Kyle Teel, 23, went on a tear this week to lead an offense that scored 42 runs in six games (7.0 runs per game). Teel went 8-for-16 with three homers, two doubles, and six walks to finish with a sparkling 1.824 weekly OPS. Teel is MLB Pipeline’s No. 28 overall prospect and the No. 3 catcher. Through 43 games in Charlotte, Teel is slashing .293/.397/.490, and he looks ready for the majors. That Garrett Crochet trade is looking great for both teams so far.

There was plenty of offense to go around for the Knights, and Colson Montgomery joined the party with a big week. Montgomery was not quite as dominant as Teel, but he went 8-for-20 with two homers, three doubles, and three walks. This great performance boosted Montgomery’s slash line to .204/.280/.349, which is still well below average (61 wRC+). However, considering how poorly his season started, he is trending in the right direction. In May, Montgomery is slashing .293/.369/.500, which is much more like what we expected.

The Barons had a huge week, going 6-for-6 against Pensacola (23-22), and they are now seven games over .500.

What else is new? The pitching staff was terrific, which is normal for the Barons. This week, it was even better than usual, as Birmingham only allowed 11 runs (1.83 per game). However, it was infielder Jacob Gonzalez who took the cake. Gonzalez, 22, went 7-for-23 with three homers and two stolen bases in as many attempts. Gonzalez gave the offense a much needed spark, and it was refreshing to see him find pop in his bat. With those three homers, Gonzalez quadrupled his season total. Entering the week, Gonzalez had a .662 OPS, but he has boosted himself to .714.

Star pitching prospect Noah Schultz also had a great week, as he provided five shutout innings. Schultz only allowed one hit, and although he issued three walks, he managed to pitch around them. Schultz lowered his ERA to 3.95, and his FIP (3.86) is very similar.

Mark McLaughlin 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K

The Dash performed much better than expected, splitting their series against Hudson Valley (29-15). This was a nice recovery from last week, when the Dash got swept.

Jordan Sprinkle, 24, had an excellent week. Most of Sprinkle’s time in the field has been in left, but he also has a lot of experience at second base and third base. This week, Sprinkle went 5-for-17 with a homer, a triple, a double, three walks, and three stolen bases in as many attempts. Sprinkle finished with a 1.047 OPS to lead the team among players with at least 15 at-bats. Well done to Sprinkle, whose .298/.425/.394 (142 wRC+) slash line suggests he could be on his way to Birmingham in the near future.

The Cannon Ballers dropped the first game of the series, but they rallied to take four out of six against Columbia (24-21). The Cannon Ballers are 25-20, putting them alongside Augusta (24-19) for first in the Carolina League South.

Grant Umberger, 23, could hardly have been any more dominant than he was on Thursday. Umberger delivered six shutout innings while tallying 11 strikeouts without issuing any walks. The only two hits Umberger allowed were singles to the first two batters of the game. After that, however, Umberger retired the next 18 batters he faced, and the Fireflies barely stood a chance. After this brilliant performance, Umberger’s ERA sits at 2.77, while his FIP (2.98) is only slightly higher.

Calvin Harris, 23, also had an excellent week, finishing 9-for-18 with three doubles, three walks, and two stolen bases in as many attempts. Harris, a catcher, is slashing .293/.359/.422 this season. This marks a large improvement over 2024, when he slashed .220/.302/.303 in 68 games with the Dash.

ACL White Sox

Record 3-2 (last week) 7-8 (overall)

Complex Sox Player of the Week

Matt Hogan .357/.526/.571, 14 at-bats
D’Angelo Tejada .357/.438/.571, 3-for-3 stolen bases, 14 at-bats
Marcelo Alcala .200/.200/.333, 15 at-bats

Reudis Diaz 1 23 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K
Tommy Sheehan 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K

The ACL White Sox won three out of five to pull themselves to within a game of .500.

Pitcher Fabian Ysalla, 20, was very difficult for opposing hitters to solve. Ysalla made a pair of starts, and he pitched four shutout innings in both of them. In the first of those games, he was on another level, as he did not allow any hits. After these terrific outings, Ysalla’s ERA is down to 1.93. By contrast, Ysalla’s FIP is 5.09, but that number is inflated by high walk totals in his two starts before this week. Ysalla’s control was much better this week, only issuing two walks in eight innings.

Outfielder Matt Hogan, 25, led the way for the offense. Hogan was an on-base machine, going 5-for-15 with five walks, a triple, and a double. Hogan’s ability to set the table made a big difference for the offense.

2025 ACL White Sox Players of the Week

Bryce Willits (May 5-11)
Stiven Flores (May 12-18)
Fabian Ysalla (May 19-25)
